Don’t Buy It; Borrow It

The Story of the Oxford Library of Things

June 2024

The Speaker: Ben Tuppen

Ben is Project Coordinator at SHARE Oxford. As their first part-time paid member of staff, he took on the challenge of building SHARE Oxford into a sustainable organisation for the future, in terms of team, finances and impact. Ben also manages Getting Oxfordshire Online, a scheme refurbishing donations of unwanted IT to donate to people who can’t afford them.

About SHARE Oxford

We aim to reduce consumption and waste, by sharing and repairing the things we use so we don’t have to buy them.

With our Library of Things, we hire out things that people only need occasionally – for example pressure washers, sewing machines or gazebos. At our monthly Repair Cafés, skilled volunteers help fix those things which would otherwise be thrown away.

Along with similar groups across the world, we are working to help solve the climate crisis. This is about our local community doing our bit, inspiring others to do the same and helping everyone live more sustainably.

The Talk

A little history of our Library of Things and how it fits in with SHARE Oxford; how we’ve got on over the years; lessons learned; and how people are using it. Examples of the things people borrow and where we’re hoping to take things next. I hope to inspire people to spread the word.
