Farming that won’t Cost the Earth

The Speaker: Ben Taylor-Davies aka Regen Ben

Ben Taylor-Davies was born and raised on a farm in Ross-on-Wye and studied geography at Liverpool University. A job as an agronomist was going extremely well until 2012 when our young son was involved in a horrific horse accident which changed everything. A Nuffield scholarship in 2015/16 and travel led to ideas of regenerative agriculture which resonated with our farm ethos of hedge planting, increased biodiversity and spaces for nature. We soon decided it was time to put the fun back into farming! Since this decision we have regenerated our farm, environment, family and mental health – its been an incredible journey.

The Talk

Ben spoke about the importance of diversity in all its forms.

He covered the five principles of regenerative farming, what they are and how they work together for a healthy, sustainable and profitable farm. He explained in scientific detail how roots work with the soil and the air, giving some of us ideas about how we might improve our little patch!

He answered wide ranging questions fully, making it clear that there is a great deal to learn about this topic and that we should keep our eyes open for bad practice and call it out. He gave us the surprising but very welcome information that the government is supporting regenerative farming very well.

Ben says: Whichever and however we look at farm diversity we see opportunities and profit.
