How I installed a heat pump and shut off the gas in a Victorian terraced house

October 2024

The Speaker: Paul Eastwood

Paul is passionate about decarbonisation. He started as a marine scientist, then shifted overseas to focus on climate and development, and more recently has turned his attention to the UK and energy planning for net zero with Ofgem. Paul realises the importance of living his principles and, as you will see, has taken huge steps to decarbonise his personal life.

The Talk

In 2022 Paul decided to end his consumption of gas for heating and cooking out of concern for the climate. His house is a Victorian mid-terrace with very modest levels of insulation and high ceilings – exactly the kind that a heat pump is supposed not to be suitable for. But to cut the biggest source of carbon emissions, the gas boiler had to go.

Paul shared the whole experience from getting a full audit of the house’s heat loss points, selecting an installer to living with the new system (warmer and more comfortable). You can see the whole talk including answers to questions here:

The slides from the talk

Paul has provided a positive treasure trove of information in the form of articles he wrote during and after the installation. They include cost breakdowns, energy consumption charts and even a video of the pump in operation (for the noise level – it doesn’t do a dance). The one I particularly recommend to anyone considering installing a heat pump is this:
